Cactus Needles Knitting Guild
Meeting – September 14, 2009
The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m.
Cara greeted the attendees and reminded everyone that knitting with Westminster Village is this Saturday and knitting at Borders is next Monday. Nobody has signed up to host a September knit together.
June Whisel was not able to attend the meeting, in her absence; Francine will assist with introducing guests. Francine introduced guests Sue Garber, who found us on-line, and Jean Borland, a guest of Harriet Lawrence.
Barb introduced Laura Madden, a personal trainer who teaches at the Scottsdale Athletic Club and Scottsdale Community College. Laura demonstrated many stretches and exercises. She also answered members questions regarding yoga poses and triceps exercises. She invited everyone to an open house for breast cancer awareness at Scottsdale Athletic Club on October 24, and provided members with 3-visit passes to the club. Laura also provided hand-outs with several stretches which Cara will scan and post to the Guild website.
Members were given the opportunity to propose any changes and/or corrections to the August meeting minutes. There was a motion by Francine which was seconded by Velvet to approve the minutes as posted on the Guild website.
The Guild received a thank-you card from Esperanca which was read to the members. The thank-you card also included photos of the delivery of knitted items which were passed around.
There was also a thank-you to the Guild published in the Back-To-School newsletter, thanking us for the knitted hats and scarves.
Velvet collected the black and white diagonal dishcloth squares and showed everyone the red car squares, which will be joined together for Project Linus’ NASCAR challenge blanket.
Veteran scarves will be collect at the October meeting and shipped to New Orleans. The 2009 pattern is a Chevron scarf made of two complimentary colors. The pattern can be accessed through the Affiliates tab on the Guild website.
Judie brought in three bags of wool yarn for everyone. She would prefer that the yarn be used for veteran scarves or Esperanca.
Betty was unable to attend the meeting, so Cara gave the Valley events report. The Fiber Factory and Tempe Yarn and Fiber both have new classes for fall – they can be found on each store’s websites. Knitting in Scottsdale is offering 20% off yarn and 50% off novelty yarns. Phoenix Knits stocks Itty Bitty Knitty Witties cards. Knit Happens is having a sale, and noted they are adding Nashua and Gedifra yarns. Jessica Knits continues their weekly sales – check their website for details. Bonnie’s is having a sale, including 40% off Malabrigo. Arizona Knitting and Needlework has new classes, and three baskets of sale yarn. The Southwest Trading Company annual garage sale will be Friday and Saturday, September 25 & 26.
Cindy noted there is a new shop – The Yarn Place & Gallery at 46th Street and Thomas in Phoenix. She handed out cards and noted the owner, Lynn, was a wholesaler and carries Chinese imports, a lot of lace and sock weight yarn.
Lisa noted there are approximately 40 paid members. Cara reminded everyone that the grace period for paying dues is over, and unpaid members will lose access to the member’s only portion of the website at the end of this week.
The possibility of a retreat was discussed again. The members present felt that a change in scheduling until February or March 2010 would be best.
Stitch & Pitch will be held this Sunday, September 20 at Chase Field. Tickets are available through the Diamondbacks website and are $15.
Francine noted that information regarding the holiday party will be available at the October meeting. Bring your checkbook to prepay for the event.
October is the Guild’s birthday – cake will be served at the October meeting.
Show and share concluded the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:14 p.m.
